Simon Thomas in Norwich to talk about his new book

Norfolk-raised TV presenter Simon Thomas is to return to Norwich in June to talk about his new book Love Interrupted about the loss of his wife Gemma who died from acute myeloid leukaemia, just three days after being diagnosed.

Simon, who was born in Norwich and grew up in Cromer then Grimston in West Norfolk where his father was an Anglican rector, has said that losing his wife Gemma to cancer in 2017 was the biggest test his Christian faith has ever had.

The life-long Norwich City fan said that telling his eight-year-old son Ethan about his mother’s death was “the most crushing, brutal thing you will ever have to say to anyone.

“If I take God out of the equation, the faith that I’ve had throughout my life, then the hope disappears because the hope is that one day I see Gemma again. In my limited experience so far, you cannot get through this and not be changed.

“The only question is what kind of person are you going to develop into and my hope in this - and hope is at the centre of how I try and deal with it - is I will try and come out a better person.”

His new book Love, Interrupted recounts Simon’s loss of Gemma and asks how you carry on after the loss of a partner. It asks challenging questions, whilst giving immense hope to anybody who has been bereaved.

Simon has been a broadcaster for nearly 20 years: starting as a Blue Peter presenter in 1999, he then spent 12 years as an anchor for Sky Sports, before fronting their flagship Premier League football coverage.

He will be speaking at Waterstones bookshop on Castle Street in Norwich Tuesday June 25, where he will be interviewed by fellow sports presenter, journalist and Norwich native, Jake Humphreys.

Tickets at £4, are available from waterstones.com

Love, Interrupted: Navigating Grief One day At a Time, at £12.99 is also available from Waterstones.
