Valentine chance to support Norwich anti-slavery work
St Thomas Norwich Trust is offering people the opportunity to support its developing work tackling modern slavery in Norfolk and across the world by attending an Evening to Bring Freedom at the Assembly house in the city on February 9.
Social Action Development Worker at STN Trust, Annabeth Taylor, said: “The event includes delicious food, live music, the opportunity to win a commissioned painting and the chance to learn more about our work fighting modern slavery here in Norfolk and beyond. Around Valentine’s Day we wanted to give people the opportunity to use our love to fight for the most vulnerable in our community.”
“In Norfolk we care for people rescued from modern slavery through our mentoring and befriending scheme, as well as those in other circumstances which enslave them such as poverty, crime, debt or homelessness. We work to raise awareness of modern slavery and we held our first 'Freedom Week' in October to mobilise the church to join the fight against it. We have also written and recently piloted a six-week small group series for churches.”
The Christian charity, which is linked to St Thomas Norwich Anglican church, is also developing a project to prevent slavery in Kolkata, India.
“We have produced a booklet called 'Sajil's Story', based on the experiences of a young girl rescued from slavery who one of our team met on a visit to Mumbai,” said Annabeth. “We have used this story in a pilot study designed to raise awareness in rural communities in India of the risks involved with sending young girls to the city to work, as they so often end up in slavery.
Some 30,000 copies of the booklet are now being printed and a campaign to distribute them across rural Indian communities will be launched later this year during a visit Kolkata to train a local team.
“We are excited about the potential of reaching thousands of people with this message and increasing the awareness of modern slavery in India,” said Annabeth.
Tickets for An Evening to Bring Freedom are £40 per head and include a three-course meal and a drink on arrival. The evening is at the Assembly House in Norwich from 7.30pm on February 9.
