Besom in Norwich to show love of God
The Besom in Norwich
is a group of Christians from various churches in Norwich who meet, pray and do social action together in order to reflect the love of God out to the community of Norwich.
Besom was established by James Odgers in London 19 years ago following his experience of working amongst the poor in Hong Kong with Jackie Pullinger. Its aim is to provide a bridge between those who want to give time, money or things and those who are in need.
Besom is primarily a service to the Christian giver. It encourages Christians to consider how God is prompting them to give and then it matches that offer with the needs in the community. The focus is on what is offered rather than what is needed.
Church members run Besom on a voluntary basis and the service it provides is completely free. Besom is rooted in prayer, encourages Christians to have a compassion for the needy in their area and takes the Gospel in a practical way to many people. Volunteers with Besom do not have to commit to any more than they are able and can, for instance, pray once a month, drive the van occasionally for deliveries, help sort donated items or join in a gardening or decorating project.
In the 33 months it has been running, Besom in Norwich has passed on beds, living room furniture, electrical goods, cots and baby items, duvets, towels, pillows, food parcels and many other items all in excellent condition and donated by church members. In addition, it has done various gardening work and painted rooms for people in need.
There have been many wonderful moments of joy in the work where God’s presence has helped to change lives.
Besom in Norwich meets to discuss and pray every Wednesday morning and once a month in the evening.
