Besom on hand to help in a moving story

AltarEarlhamWhen a large wooden altar needed moving between two Norfolk churches the Norwich Besom project stepped forward to lend a helping hand.

Rev Selwyn Tillett offered his friend and church colleague, Elaine Constantine, Vicar at St Elizabeth’s, Earlham, the wooden altar from the no longer used church of St Faith’s, Lenwade and she was delighted to accept. However, how could the altar be transported without much expense from its current home to Earlham in Norwich?

Step forward local Christian charity, The Besom in Norwich. Besom spokesman Duncan MacInnes said: “For the Besom team it was one way that we could express our thanks for the support given to the charity by Elaine since the Besom delivery van has been securely garaged at St Elizabeth’s for the last two years.”

Alan and Duncan from Witard Road Baptist Church, Gabor from Surrey Chapel and Revd Tillett slowly maneuvered the heavy altar into the van and in Earlham, churchwarden Jean was on hand to welcome it on behalf of St Elizabeth’s, with Elaine away on holiday.

As the altar made its way slowly into place, it was amazing to see that it was just the right size and exactly matched the other furniture in the church. Elaine said: “What a lovely sight greeted me on return to the church from holiday – it looks just as though it was meant to be where it is now.”
