Norfolk church celebrates coronation bell project

St. Mary’s Heacham is celebrating today as a decade-long project to restore the cupola and the commissioning of a new coronation bell concludes.

On Tuesday September 10, the current bell at St. Mary's Heacham, the oldest church bell in Norfolk, will be lowered and placed in the church for display alongside the new King Charles coronation bell. heacham-coronation-bell

The two bells will be on display to the public from 11am with refreshments served. The community is invited to come and view both bells and hear more about the project. A blessing and thanksgiving service will then take place in the afternoon followed by fizz and celebration cake.

The new bell will be lifted up the side of the church tower, placed into the new cupola, and rung for the first time on Wednesday September 11.

Heacham vicar, Rev Veronica Wilson told Lynn News: “This will be an exciting end to a project which has brought church and community together.

“The new bell not only celebrates the coronation of King Charles III but will provide a focal point for village for generations to come, once again calling people to worship, marking high days and holidays and the church’s presence in the life of Heacham.”
