EVENT CANCELLED: Stand Together at Yarmouth Minster

The multi-cultural celebration to have been held at Great Yarmouth Minster and Priory Centre in August, with local groups and individuals taking part has now been CANCELLED.

This event has been cancelled due to difficulties with staging sufficient activities at this time. It is hoped to plan an alternative in the future.

The event will be an informal, multicultural, family-focussed and free get-together to celebrate the cultural diversity of Great Yarmouth. It will include food, music, dance, games, art and poetry from a wide representation of the whole of the community.
The celebration is on Saturday August 24 from 12 noon to around 4pm. It is being organised by a range of local residents, who support Stand Up to Racism, Love Music Hate Racism and Hope Not Hate, to encourage understanding, unity and mutual respect.
The organising committee includes: Jemma Sander-Heys –Team Vicar, Great Yarmouth Parish / Minster, Della Anverali - Secretary of At-Tauwheed Mosque Management Committee, Kevin Wingfield – Stand Up to Racism, Don McAllister – Minister, Great Yarmouth Unitarian Church, Manuel Mendonca – Community Leader and Mike Smith-Clare – County and Borough Council.
They say “We are inviting members of all communities to take part in any way they can in what will be a fun event for all ages. We would love your community to be involved in the programme of events eg performing music and dance, making food, organising children’s games, contributing art and poetry pieces - or just coming along and joining in the fun. We also welcome anybody who would like to join the group planning and organising the event, we want as wide a representation as possible.”
There is a meeting at Great Yarmouth Minster on Sunday June 16 at 3pm for anyone who wants to be involved in the event, and the committee are looking for all sorts of contributions from all ages - music, dance, art, poetry, food, stalls, etc.
Roland Walford said “We are still looking for contributors from different ethnic groups - including residents, migrants, refugees - especially musicians and dancers to perform and/or run introductory teaching sessions for all ages. We are also having stalls - indoors and out - with activities, games, information etc from various community groups - groups are invited to contribute to this also. It is a non-political event celebrating diversity and multi-culturalism from an anti-racism perspective.
Although we are focussed on Great Yarmouth we will consider offers from a wider area. I am happy to meet with anybody interested to discuss - especially if they cannot attend the meeting on June 16.”
