Gamechanger exhibition at Cromer Methodist Church

2018: One of the Britain’s most important collections of modern religious art, the Methodist Modern Art Collection, will be on display in Cromer from next week, to help publicise the Community Matters café run by the church. Tony Rothe reports.

The unique collection of art featuring biblical themes and narrative has toured the UK and abroad since its inception over 50 years ago. The management of the collection is deputed to a body of trustees, whose primary aim is to enable people to connect their faith to art, and to encourage people outside the church to consider the Christian message presented through the medium of art.

Revd Sharon Willimott, Superintendent for the North Norfolk Methodist Circuit, said “Over the last five years the Community Matters Cafe that operates out of Cromer Methodist Church, has served more than 14500 bacon butties and two course meals to the homeless, lonely and financially stretched! In addition to the gift of good food visitors to the cafe are offered friendship, signposting to other agencies and practical support.

“This project is the inspiration for this prestigious art collection to be exhibited in the church. To reflect the engagements that the volunteers have with cafe clients the exhibition has been entitled 'Gamechanger' and will include works that relate to the stories of life changing encounters that Christians believe Jesus had with many on the fringes of society. It can be argued that the introduction of the Christian faith was the greatest 'Gamechanger' in human history affecting all generations since!”

The formal opening takes place on Monday August 6 at 2.30pm, after a private viewing and lunch for cafe regulars, and will remain open until 6pm. The collection will then be on display at the Community Matters Cafe, Hall Road and at the Methodist Church, West Street until Friday August 17.

The exhibition will be complemented by art workshops and reflective sessions as well as traditional bible studies, all of which will be free and open to all, with no booking required. The church hopes that the Methodist Modern Art Collection will provide an opportunity for a whole range of conversations about faith, Jesus and the human condition.
