New direction for Sheringham Christian centre
The Canaan Christian Centre in Sheringham holding a lunch meeting on Thursday March 15 to explain their new direction and to recruit more volunteers. THIS IS A NEW DATE FOR THE MEETING. Tony Rothe reports.
When Evelyn Smith, right, founded the Canaan Christian Centre at Sheringham in 1978, her aim was to provide a safe haven for women fleeing domestic violence, and give needy youngsters a chance to enjoy a holiday by the sea. But, thanks to the generosity of local people, she has been also been able to help orphans and troubled families from as far afield as Nigeria and Brazil.
The centre is a 7-bedroom detached chalet bungalow and has been housing homeless people and families for several years, with five groups currently booked in. The rear of the centre is pictured above.
Canaan will be 40 years old this year, and following a day of prayer the trustees of the centre unanimously decided that it was time for them to seek new direction and a new vision, and in its 40th year is now looking for forty more volunteers!
“Canaan has always been about helping families and everybody falls into that category, from bringing grandparents on holiday to new mums and babies, and these exciting changes will enable us to move forward” said director and founder Evelyn. "People will also hear up to date news from a group leader who is bringing inner city kids from London to holiday at Canaan, as this will be part of the new vision."
The meeting is at 12.15pm on Thursday March 15, to explain the new direction and to bring some new volunteers on board. Lunch will be provided.
The venue is: The Wolery (at the rear of the centre), Canaan Christian Centre, 21 Holt Road, Sheringham, NR11 6LJ.
Everyone interested is warmly invited to come along, but please ring Evelyn on 01263 478372 by Monday March 12 if you would like lunch!
