Postponed: Queen's former Chaplain in Swaffham

Please note it has been necessary to cancel the event in Swaffham on February 26 with the Queen's former Chaplain, the Right Rev Dr Gavin Ashenden, after he required emergency surgery for a detached retina.

On Monday, February 26 at 7pm the Right Rev Dr Gavin Ashenden was due to speak about his passion for, ‘Saving the Church in the Third Millennium’ at the Assembly (Regency) Rooms in Swaffham.

Unfortunately this event has had to be postponed as Right Rev Dr Gavin Ashenden has suffered from a detached retina.  He wrote on February 13: "It seems the Lord had other plans. I have just suffered a detached retina for the second time in 4 months, and am being admitted for emergency surgery tomorrow.  I would be very glad if you might pray for me and the recovery of my sight."

In 2017 the Right Rev Dr Gavin Ashenden resigned from the honorary position of Chaplain to the Queen which he had held since 2008, because he felt it was inappropriate to speak out on matters that he felt strongly about while in the role.

Since resigning from the role Gavin Ashenden has been consecrated as a Missionary Bishop by the Anglican Christian Episcopal Church of Canada and the USA

He was ordained in 1980 at Southwark Cathedral and served in Bermondsey as a parish priest for ten years. He then spent 23 years as a Chaplain and Senior Lecturer in the Psychology of Religion at Sussex University, during which period he presented ‘Faith and Ethics’ programmes for BBC radio.
