Royals to open the Archdeacon’s Charge in N Norfolk

The Archdeacon’s Charge on Bank Holiday Monday 1 May is an annual sponsored fun run or walk and family picnic organised by the Diocese of Norwich in support of the East Anglian Air Ambulance and local churches. It is open to all – just turn up on the day.

This year is particularly special as, through the generosity of Peter Sheppard and Keith Day, the event is taking place in the beautiful grounds of their home, Wolterton Hall, near Aylsham. The fun run route comprises of a 2.5-mile lap with participants choosing to run or walk their favoured distance, with a challenge to the fittest to run four circuits (10 miles)! Their Royal Highnesses Prince & Princess Michael of Kent will be opening the event as they are the patrons.
EAAA 600CFThe event was created by the Venerable John Ashe, Archdeacon of Lynn, as a fun way for parishes to raise money for their church and the East Anglian Air Ambulance. The local air ambulance has been very close to Archdeacon John’s heart after it saved his wife’s life, following a serious car accident.
“In 2009 my wife had a serious car accident” he explained. “The Air Ambulance air-lifted her from the crash scene and saved her life. Afterwards we discovered that it costs thousands of pounds every time the Air Ambulance is called out - so my daughter and I decided to organise the first Archdeacons Charge to help raise money for them. Every year the event gets bigger and we're able to raise more money for the life-saving work the Air Ambulance does.”
Last year the Archdeacon’s Charge was at Sandringham and over 1000 people attended, more than 300 of them ran/walked the course. Last year’s event raised just over £16,000 and half of the money raised (around £8500) went to support the EAAA. Since 2010 the event has raised over £100,000 which has been divided between the EAAA and the churches of the Diocese of Norwich.
Diocese fun run picnic 600CFAside from the sponsored run and walk, there is also a large picnic village area, which this year includes:

  • A Craft Market
  • A Classic Car Display
  • Archery
  • A second-hand book stall
  • A sweet cart
  • Ronaldo's ice-cream
  • A wide variety of refreshment stalls
  • A Plant Stall
  • Live music from the ever popular "Dixie Mix" jazz band
  • A wide variety of children’s and youth activities (including a football cage, bouncy castle and canoeing)

Wolterton Hall was built for the first Lord Walpole in the 1740s. It lies in the Parish of Wickmere with Wolterton, between Aylsham and Cromer. The view from the Hall, looking out over the lawns and to the lake across the route of the fun run, has been described as the finest view in Norfolk.
The event is open to everyone, and you can book your place online here:
www.dioceseofnorwich.org/charge.  Entry costs just £10 per family, couple or individual and applicants will receive an information pack in the post.
Those not able to come to the event are invited to sponsor Archdeacon John to complete 10 miles on the day at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Archdeacons-Charge-2017
