Norwich church appeal gives 1000 Christmas dinners

This week over 200 luxury Christmas food hampers will be given out to families facing food poverty across Norwich as a result of the annual initiative run by ‘Love Norwich’, founded by Proclaimers Church.

For the last eight years ‘Love Norwich’, a group founded by Norwich church Proclaimers, has worked with local businesses, schools and members of the public to collect items that go into making quality hampers containing everything a family needs for Christmas day lunch.

This year donations have reached record amounts enabling the charity to put together 200 hampers more that any previous year, each containing everything needed for a Christmas dinner including mince pies, custard, stuffing and even Christmas crackers.

Each hamper is carefully packed and gift wrapped by an army of over 80 volunteers who gathered last week to package them up ready for delivery. The hampers are distributed to families in need as identified by a variety of partner organisations the group works with.

Gemma Neill, Project Manager and Associate Pastor of Proclaimers said: “It’s shocking to think that here in Norwich people can struggle for basic needs like food, but sadly it is a reality for families. It’s been wonderful to have such an outstanding response from the public in donating so much to the appeal this year. All of it will be going to make a huge difference to families in need this Christmas.

"This is the most hampers we have ever been able to put together in the eight years we have run this appeal.”

This year the appeal is also bring rolled out to the town of Ipswich and city of Bratislava, Slovakia where the church also has campuses.

Gemma said: “Well over 1000 people will sit down to a Christmas lunch supplied through the appeal this December. We are so thankful to everyone who has given, whether it was just a box of stuffing from a teenager, or several hampers worth of food.”

It’s not to late to make financial donations towards the vouchers for perishable food contained in each hamper by sending a cheque made payable to ‘The Space’ to ‘Gemma Neill, Love Norwich Project Manager, The Space, Roundtree Way, Norwich, NR7 8SQ’.
