Treasures on show for Sheringham Catholics
An exhibition of vestments and other treasures will be on display at the Catholic Church of St. Joseph, Sheringham between Saturday July 30 and Friday August 5. Tony Rothe reports.
“This fine architectural setting will be displaying a range of ecclesiastical garments ranging from the eighteenth century to almost the present day” said Fr. Tim Bugby, organiser of the exhibition and owner of most of the items to be exhibited. “I have been collecting for nearly forty years – from my earliest days as an Anglican right through to joining the Catholic Church through the Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham five years ago” reported Fr. Bugby.
Many of the pieces are continental in origin – dating from the times when liturgical styles were quite different from (most) of what we see today. Many pieces display an intricate amount of embroidery and styles of needlework not seen in modern garments.
In addition to the clothes that the clergy wear, both vestments and linen, there will also be silverware and reliquaries belonging to the same collection.
The exhibition, called All Things Bright and Beautiful, will open with a private reception on Saturday July 30 from 8.00pm to 9.30pm. Tickets are on sale from Fr. Tim Bugby at £5.00 each for this reception, which has been sponsored by the Old Rock Shop Bistro in Cromer who will be providing the canapes for the evening.
The public exhibition will be open from 2pm to 5pm on Sunday July 31, followed at 6.00pm by an Extraordinary Form Mass celebrated by the parish priest, Fr. Denys Lloyd. It will then open from 10am to 6pm daily from Monday August 1 to Friday 5. Admission is free, with donations welcome.
The venue is St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Cromer Road, Sheringham, NR26 8RT
