Norwich church cafe first year a success

Beacon Cafe1
The Beacon Café, part of St Elizabeth’s Church in Earlham, Norwich, celebrated its first anniversary of opening last month - and it has been a great first year of operation.

The café is located within the church and is currently open three mornings a week for breakfast and light meals and once a month for the Kids Café service, which caters for at least 40 children and their families and provides free breakfast for children.

Each week the Beacon café sees an increasing number of both regular and new customers and provides an open access point for the community to receive support, build relationships, be signposted to relevant agencies and feel included in community life.

The cafe has had a significant impact on the community; people have connected to faith and come in for ministry and prayer.  In the past year the café has also employed two local residents, and a team of volunteers help to welcome and serve customers.

Beacon Cafe2The Beacon Café also hosts a Foodbank distribution centre on a Monday and Wednesday, providing a local distribution point for the area.  Families in crisis have accessed this, and been served with a warm welcome, a free meal and food parcels.

Danny Doran-Smith, Pioneer Minister for St Elizabeth’s Church, said, “The Beacon Café has become a central place in the area where people feel welcomed and supported and we’ve been able to build a strong sense of community support and build relationships with local residents.  We’re pleased to work in partnership with Norwich Foodbank to provide food parcels and having this located centrally in the estate means is really accessible to those who need it”.
