Homeless film launch and Norwich big sleep out

Christian charity Hope Into Action launched a DVD which highlights the plight of homeless people, followed by a Big Sleep Out event on October 16 at St Luke’s Church.

HIAbigsleepout4Hope Into Action works in partnership with churches to house and provide support to the homeless and vulnerable people. They run five houses in Norwich and volunteers from the church befriend and assist the tenants as they reacclimatise to day-to-day life.

The launch of the DVD was attended by over 50 people from the Christian community and local agencies. Following this, 25 people braved the cold and slept rough in the grounds of the church. Members of St Luke’s youth group slept in the church buidling and several mums and children joined in by making dens at home.  Hammocks, cardboard boxes, bubble wrap and tents were used the battle the elements and a local soup run visted for an authentic soup run.

Kate Doran-Smith of Hope Into Action said, “It was a really nice atmosphere. There’s a solidarity and unity in a homeless community that you don’t get elsewhere. I really felt it that night. You feel a level of vulnerability and I have a better empathy for that now.”

HIAbigsleepin2In addition to the £1,200 that was raised that night, Kate is encouraged by the response to the DVD as people have been moved by the stories. Hope Into Action have prepared some Bible study notes to go alongside the DVD and notes for high schools who are coverign homelessness in their lessons– Notre Dame High School is using these materials and local scout groups are also getting involved
