A Christian couple from Taverham have recently returned from a trip to Lima, Peru, where they visited and distributed supplies to prisoners.
Norwich couple Andy and Liz Lake
have returned from a two-week trip to visit the project they started 10 years ago. Hope and Song to Freedom
(HSF) is a project of the charity The Grassroots Trust
Andy and Liz visited the inmates in Santa Monica prison and distributed toiletries and other items to the ladies and their families.
"It was good to see familiar faces as well as make new friends" says Liz, who was also pleased to introduce people to Andy and their two children and friend who were also with them.
Andy also commented that apart from a personal journey where God challenged a lot of things in his own life, it was amazing to see how people in worse circumstances than our own trust God completely for their journey both here on earth and the hope they have for their eternal home. "We often get so caught up in our day to day life and circumstances and forget that we have a future destiny and that God is wanting to use and change us here on earth."
This project was formed in 2004 and was born out of a friendship between Liz Lake in Norfolk and Miriam Breña
Torres in Lima, Peru. As a former political prisoner, Miriam well understands the plight of the women who are in Santa Monica prison, often as a result of false charges of terrorism. She makes weekly visits, taking them nutritious food and toiletries. With money raised through the work of HSF, these visits can take place and offer encouragement to those often forgotten by society. HSF also has a property called The Ark
, accommodation available for short term use when anyone is released from prison, to allow them time to adjust to life on the outside. In addition, they also work with children in the shanty towns of Lima, some of whom have parents in prison.
Andy and Liz would welcome the opportunity to share more about the work in Peru and are available to speak to different groups. More information is also available on the website: www.hopesongfreedom.org.uk
