Star chef judges Norwich Cathedral bake off

Bake-off 3On April 22 the Refectory within Norwich Cathedral celebrated its 10th anniversary with a bake-off competition judged by Michelin star chef Galton Blackiston.

This month the Refectory within Norwich Cathedral has been enjoying a series of 10 year anniversary celebrations, including on Tuesday April 22 a special bake off competition.

The Bake Off attracted 35 entries before a shortlist of 10 cakes was decided by the Refectory’s Head Chef, Kelly Davy, and Hospitality and Catering Manager, Simon Abel.

The top 10 were then judged at a special event by Michelin star chef and owner of the Morston Hall country house hotel and restaurant, Galton Blackiston.

Sandie Taylor was crowned the winner after wowing the judge with her Waldorf Astoria cake.  The winning recipe dates back 70 years and was purchased for $100 from the chef at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, New York. Sandie first tried the cake while working in Canada, nearly 40 years ago, when one of her colleagues brought it into work on her birthday. She enjoyed the cake so much that she asked her colleague for the recipe and has been making the carrot cake ever since!

Angela Stevenson was runner-up with her innovative Canaries Cake, a zesty lemon and courgette creation, and Moya Myerscough’s wheat and dairy free Pilgrims’ Cake, a traditional cake served to pilgrims in Northern Spain, was third.

Galton Blackiston said: “The quality today was fantastic. In fact I may well have to borrow a recipe or two for my restaurants.”

The winner will now get to see her edible masterpiece take pride of place in the Refectory as it goes on sale to the public in just over a week. You can enjoy a slice of Sandie’s Waldorf Astoria cake by visiting the Refectory during May.
