The John Aves Educational Project (JAEP)
invites you to an evening with the Right Reverend Graham James, Bishop of Norwich
, and Exeter’s Labour MP Ben Bradshaw
as they converse about the Middle East.
The event will take place on Friday 7 June
at Granary Court, Bishop’s House, Norwich
with the opportunity to visit the Bishop’s garden from 6.30 pm
and hear the conversation from 7.30pm
JAEP was set up in memory of Rev Canon Dr John Aves
, a priest from the Norwich Diocese
who died whilst living and working in the Dheisheh Refugee Camp
in 2004. The project financially supports young people from the refugee camp in Bethlehem
to study at Al Quds University
. To date the project has funded seven students who would otherwise have had to leave university.
Right Reverend Graham James, Bishop of Norwich is the Patron of JAEP. He said: “John Aves was one of those clergy whom bishops treasure. Loved by the people of his parish, he had an infectious joy about him which attracted people to the Christian faith. He also had immense curiosity. He wanted to know how other people lived. That is what led him to spend the last three months of his life in the Holy Land. Not that we expected it to be the last three months of his life at all.
“He went on a special programme but found he wasn’t getting close enough to the Palestinian people. He ended up living in a refugee camp and in an astonishing short period of time became their honoured guest and confidante.”
Ben Bradshaw MP became Labour MP for Exeter in 1997. He has held various government posts including in 2001 a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Foreign Office
. During this time Ben spoke to Parliament of the situation in the Middle East. Ben is often on the panel of BBC Radio 4 ‘Any Questions’
and BBC 1 ‘Question Time’
The MP has links with Norfolk, as his father was a Canon and Vice Dean at Norwich Cathedral
and he himself worked as a journalist on the EDP
in the mid-1980s.
Elizabeth Magem, Secretary for JAEP
said: “Both Bishop Graham and Ben Bradshaw knew John well. Do join us for an evening of stimulating conversation held in a stunning location.”
Tickets are £5 to include light refreshments and a glass of wine. Tickets are available from Norwich Cathedral shop and in the Forum at MINT part of City College Norwich. The event is sponsored by Waitrose.
