Churches work together to meet need

BesomTinsA number of Norwich churches have started working together to provide a co-ordinated service linking those people who want to give time, money or things to those in the city who are in need.

The move was initiated by the Besom project in Norwich, run out of Holy Trinity Church, which celebrated its two-year anniversary in October by organising an open evening.

The aim was to encourage more Christians from the Norwich area to consider helping with the project. Speakers during the evening included Sarah King from Besom in London, Biddy Collyer from Pregnancy Crisis, Joyce Divers from Julian Housing and local Besom team members.

Besom was established by James Odgers in London some 18 years ago following his experience of working amongst the poor in Hong Kong with Jackie Pullinger. Its aim is to provide a bridge between those who want to give time, money or things and those who are in need.

Church members run Besom on a voluntary basis and the service it provides is completely free. Besom is rooted in prayer, encourages Christians to have a compassion for the needy in their area and takes the Gospel in a practical way to many people.

In the two years it has been running, Besom has passed on beds, living room furniture, electrical goods, cots and baby items, continental quilts, towels, pillows, bedding and many other items all in excellent condition and donated by church members.

Following the meeting on October 11, which was attended by 65 people, members from four churches in the Norwich area have volunteered to be representatives for Besom at their church and five other churches are organising meetings with the Besom team to see how they can get involved.
Hilary Beach who runs Besom said: “This is a very exciting time for Besom and it is wonderful that Christians in Norwich are joining together to help those in need in our city.”
