H. Tawney, the author of the most famous 20th century British socialist text, Equality (1931). They were friends at Oxford; Tawney married Beveridge's sister; Temple officiated at that wedding and at the later wedding of Beveridge. They were all very active in assisting Jewish scholars in the 1930s who were fleeing from Nazism and Tawney was a founder of what became the CCJ.
