Texas singers to lead Dereham worship event

St Nicholas Church in Dereham, together with house church network The Garden, will host a free worship night next week with Joel and Elyssa from a church in Dallas.

Home-grown worship nights have been taking place every two weeks in Dereham since September 2023.  Now a larger gathering led by Joel and Elyssa Figueroa from UPPERROOM in Dallas will happen at St Nicholas Church in Dereham at 7pm on Saturday August 31.
 
Elyssa is best known for writing, “Surrounded (Fight my Battles)”. She has been nominated for a Grammy and Best Worship Song of the Year at the Dove Awards. She has been attending and leading worship at UPPERROOM Dallas for many years, including serving in their prayer room three times a week.  Likewise, Joel has been leading worship with Elyssa at UPPERROOM and they were married in April this year.
 
The UPPERROOM in Texas began with a small gathering of people praying morning, noon, and night at a vet clinic over 14 years ago.  It has since impacted the world with its music and ministry. Last year alone UPPERROOM had over 5 million views on YouTube of which half were under the age of 34.  Joel and Elyssa’s songs have connected with young and old alike across the globe.
 
Revd Canon Paul Cubitt, team Rector of the Dereham & District Team Ministry, said, “The simple informal and open nights of prayer and worship have brought a richness to the lives of Christians from Cambridge, Suffolk and Norfolk in the last year and we are now really excited to welcome Elyssa and Joel for what I am sue will be a special night.”
 
Refreshments will be available, including doughnuts.  The event is free, but donations will be very welcome.
