Gorleston church hosts hunt for Easter meaning

St Mary Magdalene Church welcomed over 300 people to their event on Easter Saturday involving an Easter egg hunt, crafts, hot cross buns and live action stations of the cross.

Families from Gorleston flocked to the church in order to take part in the Easter egg hunt round the Magdalen estate. During the hunt they collected letters from the eggs they found, allowing them to assemble the phrase “Jesus is risen!” and return to the church to collect a chocolate egg as a prize.

Once back at St Mary Magdalene Church there were crafts and activities related to the Easter story, hot cross buns and drinks. In total 326 individuals passed through the church in the course of the afternoon.

Outside in the garden families could explore the Easter story by talking to people representing the various characters who were present at the time of Jesus's death and resurrection, including Mary the mother of Jesus, a soldier who observed the crucifixion, and doubting Thomas. Anna Price, who is community strategic manager at St Mary Magdalene Church and played the part of Mary, commented: “I was able to share with so many eager children and attentive parents the wonder of the cross in our live action stations of the cross. A very special privilege.”

One family wrote on Facebook: “We had such a lovely day! Thank you very much, and we look forward to our first Sunday service tomorrow.”

Rev Matthew Price, vicar of St Mary Magdalene Church, said, “Our mission and vision as a church is to be a transforming presence in the community. Hosting events like the community Easter egg hunt, not only give us an opportunity to share something of the hope at the heart of the Easter story, but also to facilitate a community celebration, modelling the life in all its fullness which Jesus offers. I am delighted that so many responded to our invitation this Easter.”
