Norfolk bishops' prayers plea after heatwave fires

Two Norfolk bishops have asked people to join them in praying for communities severely affected by devastating fires seen across Norfolk in this week’s record heatwave.

One of the worst-hit villages was Ashill in central Norfolk where at least 12 homes were destroyed on Tuesday by blazes sparked by the unprecedented temperatures.

The Bishop of Norwich, Graham Usher, will be with the community at St Nicholas' Ashill this Sunday for the 9.30 Holy Communion service and he tweeted: "Sunday's gospel about prayer and hospitality has much to say about how we care for all who have lost their homes this week."

Speaking about the devastating fires, Bishop of Lynn, Jane Steen, said: “I was so sorry to learn of the destructive fire at Ashill. I spoke with local clergy about this and know that they are preparing to help with things people will want and need as they try to recover from the shock of losing their homes.

“I am praying for all those who have experienced this trauma and for those from the local authority, churches, voluntary organisations, and the neighbourhood who are supporting them."

Other areas affected by the fires include Brancaster Staithe, Poringland, Ashmanhaugh, Snettisham and Stibbard.

The Diocese of Norwich said: “Please join us in praying for all those who have been affected by these devastating fires and for those who serve in our emergency services.”
