Norwich Christian charity asks victims to share story

Joan MacInnes, Coordinator of Norwich’s Prison Fellowship is appealing to people who have been victims of crime - however long ago - to share their experience with a group of prisoners as part of a restorative justice course at HMP Norwich.

Prison Fellowship Norwich, a group of Christians serving HMP Norwich, are looking for people who have been victims of crime to share their story as part of the Sycamore Tree course - a six-session restorative justice and victim awareness course for men and women in prison.

Half way through the course, a victim of crime is invited to come and tell their story, sharing how the offence committed against them has affected them, both at the time and in the longer term.

Joan MacInnes, Prison Fellowship coordinator for Norwich (pictured), says, "In the New Year, Prison Fellowship Norwich are beginning a Restorative Justice course for offenders in HMP Norwich. The course is based on the story of Zaccheus and helps offenders recognise the effects their offences can have on their victims, their families, the wider community and themselves.”

“During the six-week course, someone who has been a victim of crime comes into prison to describe their personal experience to those who are taking part in the course. This often has a marked effect on offenders, helping them to realise, as they may not have done before, just how their offences can affect others and how they can change their behaviour in future."

If you have been a victim of crime - it need not be recent - and you are willing to share your story with a group of learners in prison, you would be warmly welcomed and appreciated! You do not need any past experience of prison ministry, and would be fully supported and prepared.

Joan would love to hear from you if you think you might be able to help and would like to find out more.  Please contact her on jpmacinnes@gmail.com.
