Michael Gibbs farewell 750AT

Farewell celebration for Yarmouth church Reader

A 'Farewell Sung Eucharist' has taken place at St Mary's Church, Southtown for Michael Gibbs in recognition of his 28 years' service as a Reader in the Parish of Great Yarmouth.

A large congregation gathered on a warm Sunday evening to celebrate Michael’s many years of service. The Eucharist was celebrated by the Rev Canon Simon Ward assisted by members of the Great Yarmouth Ministry Team. Also present was the Rev Charles Read, Diocesan Reader Training Coordinator. The music and hymn singing was led by Parish Organist Martyn Marshall and the Minster Choir. Readings were given by Marion Lawrence and Michael Gibbs. Fr Simon preached the sermon. The Intercessions were offered by Reader Pat Stringer.

This was a joyful service which ended with Fr Simon bringing forward Michael Gibbs and speaking about his life and ministry in the parish, together with the Rev Charles Read who talked about Reader Ministry and the commitment that Michael had made over his many years' service. Pat Stringer presented to Michael on behalf of the Parish, a cheque representing the gifts of the congregations of the Minster, St Paul's and St Mary's.

The evening ended with the cutting of a celebration cake and all sharing glasses of wine and fruit juice and savouries. Michael has moved from Great Yarmouth and is now living in Nottingham to be nearer to his family.
