Salthouse church repairs now underway

2018: Major repairs have now started to St. Nicholas church tower in Salthouse, following the award of a Heritage Lottery Fund grant.

The Grade 1 listed parish church of St. Nicholas in Salthouse, which is part of the Weybourne Group within the Holt Deanery, stands high on a hill overlooking the village, the salt marshes and the North Sea. The tower is the only remaining part of the original 13th century church which was burnt down making way for a larger 16th century building.

At some stage in its history, the tower was erroneously rendered and re-pointed with cement mortar which led to moisture being trapped behind, causing major decay to stonework, flint work and the internal plaster; and de-stabilising the walls to the stair turret.  The flaking plaster on the west wall was beginning to be a hazard to visitors to church activities, including the annual art exhibitions and concerts.

Following the PCC'S successful application bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund in December 2017 resulted in an award of £170,600, and the “Friends of Salthouse Church” made a gift of £35,000 gift towards the costs of the project. This funding has enabled restoration work to start.

As the work continues hacking off the cement mortar and removing badly decayed quoin stones, saddle stones and mullions, the top section of the west wall of the tower is already repointed with hydraulic lime and the new stonework is ready to be worked. The project is expected to take until the end of the year.

Andrew Wigley, Church Warden and joint Project Co-ordinator said “Several planned community activities, including a permanent interchangeable exhibition displaying the history of Salthouse, will be housed in the newly restored tower, and these formed part of our application”
