Yarmouth memorial service remembers ATS war victims

2018: A memorial service was held in Great Yarmouth to mark the 75th anniversary of a German bombing raid which killed 26 ATS women.

The 11am service was conducted by Rev Stephen Andrews, Royal British Legion branch welfare officer, and was held at the town’s Burlington Palm Hotel, which is on the site of the hostel which was bombed 75 years earlier by a Focke Wulf 190, on May 11, 1943.

Present at the annual ceremony were three former ATS members from Norwich, now in their 80’s and 90’s, who travel to Yarmouth each year to pay their respects to the 26 women who donned uniform to help the war effort. They all said they attended every year as it was important to keep the remembrance tradition alive.

From next year the event will be overseen by the Great Yarmouth branch of the Royal British Legion and the Norfolk branch of the Women’s Royal Army Corps Association, with both pledging the tradition will continue for many years.
