New Surrey Chapel plans in Anglia Square development

The development companies Weston Homes and Columbia Threadneedle have this week submitted plans to Norwich City Council for the regeneration of Anglia Square which include a new home for Norwich church Surrey Chapel.

Weston Homes and Columbia Threadneedle have this week submitted a planning application to Norwich City Council for the redevelopment of Anglia Square following two years of discussions and consultation.  The plans, which would result in 1,200 new homes, a shopping and a leisure quarter and a series of courtyards, plazas and boulevards, includes a new home for Norwich church Surrey Chapel.

Surrey Chapel has been in its current home on Botolph Street, adjacent to Anglia Square, since 1985 and has been through the process of planning applications with previous developers.

In 2016 Weston Homes contacted Surrey Chapel to find out whether they were still interested in moving from the current site if a new development went ahead.  The church has now entered into a formal five year options agreement with Weston Homes.  This agreement means that subject to everything going ahead with the new proposals, if Weston Homes require the site on Botolph Street, Surrey Chapel will give up the site in return for a new chapel built close by.

The new purpose-built chapel, estimated to cost £2.5million, would be built on Edward Street with a main worship area for around 350 people, 30% bigger than the current facility.

Surrey Chapel Elder Philip McDonald said: “We are incredibly enthusiastic about it. We are praying that the planning application will be successful and that the developer, Weston Homes, will be able to get the consent that will enable them to develop.  We will be very happy to be part of the new community of Anglia Square. With over 1,000 new homes, this means a new community right on our doorstep.”

Philip continued: “We are excited around the possibility and praying for the process, but the work very much continues at Surrey Chapel in the meantime. There is still lots to do. While we are excited about the future we are still very much ploughing forward in the present.”
