Planning for the future… and eternity

Derek Gidney reminds us that, when it comes to planning, eternal life should be number one on the list.

Planning is very important - the saying ‘Failure to plan is a plan for failure’ is very true.

At the lowest level, perhaps, is a daily or weekly plan, so that we know what ‘needs’ to be done and what we would ‘like’ to get done.  We should plan further ahead than that though: we should all plan for our future, for retirement and for old age. Something that seems very popular nowadays (according to the adverts) is a funeral plan, so that all expenses and arrangements are in hand for when we get to the end of this journey called life. Perhaps it is good to know that we have that covered.

What about after that point though?  Have you thought about and planned for where you will spend eternity?  This body that we live in will stop eventually, but it is only actually the house that the ‘real you’ lives in. At the moment of death we move out of this ‘house’ and move on to a new one which is our ‘forever home’.

When we move house here on earth it must be planned well, otherwise it can be a disaster. The same is true of our move to our ‘forever home’. Jesus said (John 14:2) “In my Father's house are many dwellings, if it were not so I would have told you.  I go to prepare a place for you”.  Jesus has a dwelling prepared for you for when this earthly life has ended; He has paid the price for you in full.

Just the same as with a house move here on earth, though, you have to collect the key otherwise you can't get in through the door.  The key to that heavenly home is faith in, and a personal relationship with, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus himself said “unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3). Each of us needs to repent of our sin and tell God we are sorry and ask forgiveness of our sins, ask Jesus to come into our lives as Saviour and Lord, then we can rest assured that we have everything covered for the future.  It would be terrible to end up homeless for all eternity, to have God say to you "I never knew you, depart from Me, you who practise lawlessness" (Matthew 7:23).

Make sure you have your key today.
