New Archdeacon of Norwich announced

The Revd Canon Karen Hutchinso
The Bishop of Norwich has announced that The Revd Canon Karen Hutchinson, currently Vicar of The Bourne and Tilford United Benefice in the Diocese of Guildford is to become Archdeacon of Norwich and Warden of Readers.

Karen will be collated and installed as Archdeacon of Norwich and Warden of Readers at 3.30pm on Sunday 13 November in Norwich Cathedral. All are welcome to attend the service.

Karen was born in 1964 in Lincolnshire. Her father served in the RAF. She read Mathematics at the University of Oxford (Lady Margaret Hall) and qualified as a solicitor in 1989 working for a decade in litigation. She trained for ordination at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford, serving a curacy in the Diocese of Winchester whilst studying for an MA in Applied Theology through the University of Kent at Canterbury. She has served as incumbent of two benefices in the Diocese of Guildford and for the past five years has been the Diocesan Adviser for Women’s Ministry. She has been an elected member of General Synod, representing the clergy of the Diocese of Guildford, since 2013.

Karen is married to Richard who is a freelance copy-editor and they have two adult children who live in Bristol and Basingstoke.

Karen visited the Diocese of Norwich last year as part of a leadership course and says this of her new appointment: “From my first visit to the Diocese of Norwich last year I have felt strongly drawn to return. It's a diverse diocese in a historic and beautiful part of the country, led by a senior staff team who greatly value their clergy and lay people. I will be sad to leave the people in my current benefice and Diocese, but am very much looking forward to working with new colleagues and parishes in Norwich and taking forward the renewed Mission Strategy.”

Bishop Graham said: “Karen Hutchinson has a rich experience of parish and diocesan ministry, as well as her legal training and practice, to bring to the role of Archdeacon of Norwich and Warden of Readers. She has won the hearts of the people of her present benefice by her strategic leadership and pastoral imagination. I am confident she will soon come to love this diocese and its people and be greatly appreciated for the gifts she will bring.”
The Rt Revd Andrew Watson, Bishop of Guildford said: 'Karen has contributed hugely to the life of the diocese over the past ten years, both through the excellence of her parish work, as a member of General Synod and in her wider contribution, notably as Advisor on Women's Ministry. Her warmth, wisdom, spiritual depth and unflappability will be greatly missed, and I have no doubt that she will make an outstanding Archdeacon of Norwich'.
