Shroud of Turin exhibition at Norwich cathedral
The Shroud of Turin Exhibition, which takes a life-sized replica of the Shroud to different venues across the world, will be visiting St John the Baptist Cathedral in Norwich from March 7 to 18.
The actual Shroud is housed in the Cathedral of the Italian city of Turin and, because of its extraordinary nature, it is the subject of many books and documentaries. The Shroud of Turin exhibition hopes to give visitors a chance to understand more about the mysteries of the Shroud.
Cathedral education officer, Jo Anderton, said: “The exhibition should help the visitor understand the nature of the Passion of Christ and the story of Easter. The Shroud of Turin also offers a mystery story that ties together many different disciplines – religion, science, art, archaeology and history and yet even in the 21st century there are no answers to the question ‘How was the image formed?’
The exhibition uses the replica of the Shroud as a visual aid to tell the story of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and to examine the mystery of the cloth. It takes the journey of Jesus from his trial through the events of Good Friday to the empty tomb, using passages from the four gospels. It tries to demonstrate what the flogging, the whip; the piercings, the nails and spear were really like, using the Shroud as a teaching aid.
It includes a 15-foot shroud, a 12 foot tomb, a life-sized cross and videos telling the story of the Passion of Jesus.
The exhibition will be open from Monday March 7 to Friday March 18, the two weeks leading up to Palm Sunday and then Easter week, and is free to visit.
The final day of the exhibition also coincides with the UK release of the new movie, Risen which tells the Biblical story of the resurrection of Jesus and the weeks that followed, as seen through the eyes of an unbelieving Clavius, a high-ranking Roman military tribune, played by actor Joseph Fiennes.
Opening times of the exhibition are: 7:30am – 6:30pm every day
