Volunteers sought for Norwich youth outreach

Jenny Lind teamCF
Organisers of the young people’s work on Jenny Lind Park, are looking for more volunteers, with practical skills to help renovate the community building, and people to help support the young people.

After securing tenancy of the old sub-post office the group have completed a thorough stripping out and also structural changes required for the space to become a young people’s  space outside of school time and a church run community resource during the day (9 till 3.30). Work is still needed to complete the connecting up of utilities and some fixed furnishings

Jenny Lind Park Young People’s Work is a group of people from several churches local to Vauxhall Street and Chapelfield. These include Holy Trinity, Elim Pentecostal, Chapelfield Methodist and St Stephens. The group is supported by the Christian Community Trust for Norwich and Norfolk and bases its work on collective local church outreach strategies and the central vision of the ‘Transforming Norwich’ organisation. This vision was, recently endorsed and inspired further by the visit to Norwich from Rev Dr Alistair Petrie (involved in the transformation of cities worldwide for many years), culminating in the ‘Global Day of Prayer Service’ in Norwich Cathedral on May 24th.

The group needs more people to add to its current group of twenty who can help to organise the final stage of equipping and overseeing the internal work (electrics, plumbing, heating and security etc) in readiness for an end of summer launch for its intended multi-community use purpose.

The group also needs new volunteers to join its park work team for organising sports sessions for local young people and pastoral support and safe oversight of the park for people of all ages who travel through it and stop to use it on midweek evenings. All newcomers will be guided through a thorough DBS (CRB) accreditation process and signing up to fulfil all the necessary safety and park (with adjoining internal space) management policies. If joining the team in delivering this work interests you we would be delighted to welcome you on board for whatever time you have to give.

Last year, group leader Tim Stapleford received a Norfolk Police ‘Community Citizen of the Year’ award for the work with local young people, which included a significant reduction of anti-social behaviour. He accepted this in full recognition of the collective work of the whole team which had been working on the park over the previous five years.

If you would like to know more about this work please contact Tim Stapleford timstapleford@sky.com or register your interest with Holy Trinity Church Office (01603 622225) info@trinitynorwich.org. Alternatively, pop along to Jenny Lind Park to see the work going on, currently on any Tuesday or Thursday during term time between 5.30 and 7.30pm.
