, based in the Catton Grove
area of Norwich
Joel, 18, from Cape Town, South Africa
will be part of the Oak Grove team through a DNA
placement, until August.
Joel is a keen musician and sportsman. He will be working in a number of areas of the existing youth and children’s work, and will also help to set up new after school clubs and youth events.
Joel said: "I'm really looking forward to being involved with the youth and seeing what God's going to do among them, in me and through me while serving at the church. It's been great getting to know everyone and I can't wait to make more lasting friendships with my brothers and sister in Christ."
A DNA placement offers young people the opportunity to develop their skills, understanding and character while serving in a local church. Approximately a third of DNA trainees go on to full or part time church leadership.
Following the appointment of a new youth worker, Peter Young
, last year funded by Children in Need
, the church has a vision to become more involved in detached youth work and one-to-one mentoring for existing youth attending groups as well as other young people in the community and schools locally.
Joel will play a big role in getting these activities implemented and building aspects of the youth work that the church has been unable to address without dedicated personnel.
, the Senior Pastor of Oak Grove Chapel
said: “It is great to have Joel on board and the timing is excellent as he will be able to be involved in many of the new activities that are planned for the youth work from their inception.”
