Norfolk families enjoy clowning in the cloister

MU family day1Over 100 children, families and friends enjoyed an afternoon of games and circus skills in the beautiful surroundings of Norwich Cathedral cloister at a half-term fun day organised by Mothers' Union.

A recent poll showed that most families spend less than 49 minutes together and the fun-packed free event was held in support of National Family Week to address this issue.

The afternoon started with a short service in the Cathedral. Everybody gathered in the nave to join in with songs and drama sketches revolving around Bible readings. The children and their families then spilled out into the cloister to enjoy a picnic in the sunshine followed by circus activities led by Christian group The Friendship Circus.

Face painting, balloon modelling, stilts, plate spinning and juggling where just some of the fun activities on offer. Children from toddlers up to primary school age had the chance to try all the activities and there were plenty of volunteers on hand to ensure the day went smoothly.

MU family day2Bishop Graham James joined in the games and was spotted in a clown's hat attempting to balance on the peddle gos - a difficult skill to master!

One parent said, "Attractions and days out can be expensive so it's so nice to bring our own picnic and come here for such great entertainment that's free. My kids have had such a good time today; I hope they do it again next year!"

Barbara Bryant, Community Development Co-ordinator from Mothers' Union said, "This was the first time we have run an event like this and we are delighted that it has gone so well.  It’s been a great opportunity to give families a good time together and a reminder that you don’t always have to pay to play!”
