Lambeth bishops flock to Norwich Diocese

lambeth-bg1Two archbishops and three bishops from across the world, including a female bishop from the USA, visited the Norwich Diocese last weekend (July 12 - 13). Their visit formed part of the run-up to the Lambeth Conference which will be held in Canterbury from 16 July – 3rd August.

The Archbishops of Hong Kong and Papua New Guinea together with the Bishops of Olympia (USA), Aipo Rongo (Papua New Guinea) and Dogura (Papua New Guinea) took part in a number of visits across the Diocese as part of the Pre-Lambeth hospitality programme which aims to give the bishops time to adjust to their new surroundings and see a different part of the country before the Lambeth Conference.

The main public event was a service at Norwich Cathedral on Sunday (13th) during which the Bishop of Norwich interviewed the archbishops of Hong Kong and Papua New Guinea.

On Monday, the bishops visited the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham and Blickling Hall, before attending a welcome dinner in the evening. On Tuesday they visited the two diocesan offices to meet the diocesan staff and appeared on BBC Radio Norfolk.

The Lambeth Conference takes place every ten years at the invitation of the Archbishop of Canterbury. It is the one occasion when all the bishops of the world wide Anglican Communion can meet for worship, study and conversation. Archbishops, diocesan, assistant and suffragan bishops are invited. Also invited are bishops from other churches 'in communion' with the Anglican Communion, bishops from United Churches and a number of ecumenical guests.

The bishops and archbishops visiting Norfolk are:

The Most Revd Paul Kwong, Archbishop of Hong Kong

The Most Revd James Ayong, Archbishop of Papua New Guinea

The Rt Revd Nedi Rivera, Bishop of Olympia (female bishop)

The Rt Revd Nathan Ingen, Bishop of Aipo Rongo and his wife, Jessica Ingen

The Rt Revd Tevita Talanoa, Bishop of Dogura, and his wife, Winnifred.
