Norwich churches offer Good Friday gift

Members of Norwich churches will be at the Forum on Good Friday to be 'the Hands of Jesus' to the people of the city, by offering hand massages as a means of demonstrating God's love. Andy Bryant reports.

On Good Friday when our Lord is nailed by hands and feet to the cross, the Anglican churches from across the city will be offering a gift to the city - the gift of looking after their hands.  As our Lord’s hands were wounded for love we will show our love by caring for the hands of those who pass by.
On the day the depth of God's love for the world was was revealed on the cross we want to witness to God's love for the city of Norwich and all who live or visit here.  Because God has so loved us, by the simple gift of hand massage we want to show our love for all who pass by.  Good Friday is a day for deeds not words; we do not want to talk about love but to live it with a gift, freely given, to mark a day of deep significance to us. It is motivated by the belief we need to show people love before we talk to them about Love.  We need to put love into action before trying to tell the story  - and ideally we do this by meeting people at their point of need.
Outside the Forum on Friday April 14 from 10am-2pm, we will set up three gazebos offering hand massage.  To each person who receives a massage we will give a card with a simple message about the significance of the day.  Other literature will be available for those who are wanting to explore things deeper using the One Friday campaign literature.  We are delighted that Norwich East Deanery has been given a Sharing Good News Grant from the Diocese of Norwich to support this event.
The inspiration for this event comes from a team from Norwich Cathedral who have learnt the art of hand massage and who first offered this gift to visitors to last year's Royal Norfolk Show.  During the two days of the show the team were kept busy as people queued to receive this simple but much appreciated ministry of touch.  Some just relaxed and received the massage in silence, others wanted to talk, all spoke of feeling calmer and more peaceful from the experience.  Now the same gift is being offered in the city centre.  So come and enjoy the gift of free hand massage.  Take a break from rushing around the city, have a moment for yourself, pause, relax, unwind.  Hand massage is non-intrusive, simple, soothing and calming; let the stress fall away.  A wonderful gift on a very significant day.
