Tributes flood in for Norfolk Methodist minister

NeilHarper2009: Tributes have been flooding in for West Norfolk Methodist minister Rev Neil Harper who has died suddenly at the age of 43.

Neil, who was minister of five churches in and around King’s Lynn, died at home on October 27.

David Howarth - Superintendent Minister, West Norfolk Circuit, said: “It was a great shock and sadness to learn early on Tuesday morning that Rev Neil Harper had died suddenly at home. We are all bereft so unexpectedly of a good friend and faithful minister.”

A Facebook group has already formed with around 160 members, with many paying heartfelt tributes to Neil.

Lynese Morris wrote: “News of the sudden death of Neil has been a huge shock - he was a great man, with a fantastic personality and a huge love for all people. He will be missed by many people - but most especially by his family, who we hold before God in prayer.”

Gill Hulme wrote: “Neil was a such a lovely bloke, with a wicked sense of humour. He made me welcome on my very first day at Wesley House moving into 'top C'. His kindness in small unexpected ways made you feel very special. I just can't believe it.”

Julie Himmons wrote: “I am overwhelmed with sadness. One of the most important people in my life has gone to heaven today. I took his time here with us for granted and I wish I hadn't.”

David Gifford wrote: “Neil was a minister who appealed to all age groups and what I call an inclusive minister. At London Road he was minister, pastor, friend, community worker, choir member, flower arranger, sketch arranger with an infectious enthusiasm.”

Wendy Jackson wrote: “This is all so surreal, like a dream. i wish it was and i could wake up. Neil was more than a friend to me and my family. The world has lost a wonderful man, a fantastic tenor (when we have so little of these) and a selfless man of God. I have lost part of myself that i will never be able to get back.”

Neil came from Nuneaton where he was a prolific amateur actor, once playing the role of Friar Tuck.

After six years of training to be a Methodist minister, Neil was ordained at Beverley in Yorkshire, watched by mother Mary, father Gren and sister Yvonne.

At the time Mary said: “He was always interested in the church as a little boy. To see him ordained as a minister was wonderful. We were just so proud.”

Neil's funeral will take place on Monday November 9. A private family cremation will be followed by a service for the celebration of his life at 2.30pm at, London Rd Methodist Church, King’s Lynn.
