Garden party boosts redevelopment of Thetford church

The redevelopment plans for St Cuthbert’s Church in Thetford received a boost at the end of August, as churchgoers Margot and Keith Eldred hosted a summer garden party raising over £900 towards the proposed changes.

On the beautiful late summer evening of Friday, August 25 Keith and Margot Eldred hosted a summer party in their garden of Rivers Meet, Thetford to raise funds for the redevelopment of St Cuthbert's Church.

The proposed changes and improvements to the church, situated in the centre of Thetford, will create a flexible interior, which will be suitable both for worship and community use.

The garden party set in a stunning location raised £900 towards phase one of the redevelopment project.  This phase includes refurbishing and upgrading the hall to provide a new meeting room, a fully equipped catering kitchen, new toilets, internal access for disabled people and extra eating space created by the removal of pews in parts of the church.

The party included cocktails and canapes served by members of St Cuthbert’s congregation and an auction presided over by Keith Eldred, who entertained guests wearing an attention seeking hat, while making sure the bids for items such as a champagne tea and handpainted Thetford plates, added up to a tidy sum.

Rachel Woods from Thetford Open Gardens said:  “After more sweet treats of cakes and fruit kebabs, our host Keith sent firework rockets into the air to end the evening and let Thetford know that something special was happening in town! So thank you to all those who donated auction lots and helped in many ways to make this evening so successful and raise over £900 for St Cuthbert's Church Redevelopment Fund.”

The congregation of St Cuthbert’s and the community of Thetford has already raised over £50,000 towards the first stage of the project.

Members of St Cuthbert’s hope that the improved facilities will be well used by the local community including for local schools, meals for pensioners and disadvantaged groups, for IT classes and job search support, for parent and toddler groups, as a base for migrants’ language classes, for Thetford Street Pastors and as a University of the Third Age.
