Aylsham church fills the holiday hunger gap
Jubilee Family Centre in Aylsham ran a MakeLunch project during the summer holidays to provide meals and activities for local children during the summer holidays. Tony Rothe reports.
Free school meals make a huge difference to more than 1.2 million children in the UK, but when schools are closed in the school holidays, so are the kitchens. There are over 300 primary school children who are eligible for a free school meal in Aylsham and the surrounding villages.
This is the need that MakeLunch aims to fill. MakeLunch is a national initiative (www.makelunch.org.uk) responding to families struggling on tight budgets and aims to fill the holiday hunger gap.
Ann Gallagher from the Jubilee Family Centre explains : “We are really excited to have launched MakeLunch @ Jubilee Family Centre. MakeLunch @ Jubilee is open to families with children ages 0-11yrs (and their siblings) from Aylsham and the surrounding villages who would like a free, healthy hot meal, fun activities and a place to relax during the school holidays. This year MakeLunch @ Jubilee has been open on Wednesdays throughout the Easter and summer holidays.
“We have had great fun with activities such as table football, air hockey, giant Connect 4 and Super Mario! There have been some amazing crafts made in the Crafty Corner and our very young members have had fun in their own Toddler Zone. And then there’s the food! We all sit down together and enjoy a hot, delicious and nutritious meal. Homemade burgers with pitta bread, pasta bolognaise and ice-cream factory are just a few dishes of the 154 lunches that have been served over the summer.
“We are incredibly grateful to our amazing team of volunteers from Aylsham Community Church and the support and encouragement we have received from Cromer and District Foodbank. Thank you to Tesco Aylsham for their donations of food through FareShare FoodCloud and fresh fruit, and also Budgens of Aylsham for their donations of fresh peaches each week.”
