Sheringham churches to host Choral Society events
Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society have planned their programme for the next 12 months, with an open rehearsal in September, and a workshop and concert in Sheringham churches in October, and a programme of wonderful sacred music throughout the year. Tony Rothe reports.
The group will be holding an open rehearsal at 7pm on Monday September 12 at Sheringham High School. Anyone is welcome to come along and "give choral singing a go" and find out more about the Society’s plans for the year. There is no need to book in advance – just turn up on the night.
The evening will provide an opportunity to meet and work with the new musical director, David Ballard, right. They will be preparing for their November concert: In Every Corner Sing, with music by Vaughan Williams and Parry, accompanied by Anthony Gowing.
Bob Cumber from the society says “This will be a great opportunity to try out the idea of choral singing with this well-established, highly regarded 100 strong choir. Whether you are already an accomplished singer or just finding your way around a music stave choral singing is a highly enjoyable pastime and you will quickly feel at home in this friendly group. All voice parts will be most welcome.”
Come & Sing Haydn's Nelson Mass will be a free community event on Saturday October 15, with a workshop from 10 am to 4pm at Lighthouse in Sheringham, followed at 5pm by an informal scratch concert in St Peter's Parish Church in the town.
The day is open to singers of all ages and all abilities, and is free, thanks to the support of Norwich & Peterborough Building Society, John Jarrold Trust and Norfolk County Council.
The choice of music fits the theme of this year’s COAST Arts Festival which is Revolution. The Nelson Mass is also called Missa in Augustis – Mass in times of trouble.
The performance in St Peter’s at 5pm will provide an opportunity to show what has been achieved to friends and family. St Peter’s "posh refreshments" will be available before and after the informal concert. There is no need to book for the free concert – simply come along. There will be a retiring collection for church funds.
Please book in advance for the Come & Sing workshop with Jo Hurrell on 01263 711087 or email email@example.com. Please indicate if you wish to borrow a vocal score or will provide your own.
For the first time ever the Society has published their full programme for the year at the outset - partly to inform potential audience members and partly to recruit new singers. A brochure can be downloaded from www.sheringhamandcromerchoral.co.uk or a paper copy obtained by sending an SAE to SCCS Secretary, Brownwood, Pond Hills Road, Hempstead, Holt NR25 6TP.
