Bishop of Norwich condems Happy Brexit Day poster

The Bishop of Norwich has joined church and civic leaders, MPs and residents across Norfolk in condemning the racist “Happy Brexit Day” poster pinned up in a Norwich tower block on Friday.

The poster appeared in multiple locations inside Winchester Tower on Vauxhall Street near Norwich city centre, on January 31, the day the UK left the European Union.

The anonymous poster was put up ordering tenants to either speak English or move out and has been met with widespread defiance and a demonstration outside, as well as fresh posters being put up in support of European tenants.

BishopGrahamUsherDesk750The Bishop of Norwich, Rt Rev Graham Usher (pictured right), said: “I found the wording on the poster appalling and contrary to my experience of the city of Norwich as a place of welcome and care. Our national history is also one where people who have been persecuted and driven from their homes as refugees can make their home.”

He added: "Britain will only be 'Great' if it continues to show the values of tolerance, understanding and generosity to those who become our neighbours."

On Friday Bishop Graham tweeted: "Thinking tonight of those other Europeans who have enriched, enlightened, encouraged and enlarged my faith, particularly at Taize. We remain united in Christ, still companions on the journey, seeking to build up our communities, healing the brokenhearted and binding up the wounded."
