Jonathan Veira brings hymns to life in Gorleston

Singer Jonathan Veira will be returning to Gorleston at the end of January with a new one-man show which blends a love of hymns with his own style of laughter, storytelling and entertainment.

Jonathan, who is well known for his appearances on BBC’s Songs of Praise, will be at St. Andrew’s Church in the town on Saturday January 26. It will be his fourth visit to Gorleston, where he has previously appeared at Cliff Park Community Church and twice played to large houses at Gorleston Pavilion.

Jonathan’s rich voice covers many styles of music including opera, where he is a regular performer with Glyndebourne and other companies. But his more recent one-man shows have focussed more on hymns, as he feels that so many familiar hymns from the past can speak to people today, and so he and his wife Sue have composed new tunes or arrangements.

‘These are glorious, singable and memorable new tunes for some wonderful old hymns – breathing new life into the stunning words !’ he says. The Hymns Project has resulted in a CD and a music book.

Jonathan Viera 600CFHis recent appearance on Songs of Praise in October – which also revealed a love of classic cars – saw him perform his version of ‘O Love that will not let me go’ which was very well received.  He says he is once again looking forward to a return visit to Gorleston and sharing his sense of humour, love of hymns and encouraging the audience to join in: ‘We have had a fantastic time teaching them to people, it is just great to hear people SING! I love it!’

Jonathan Veira is the latest Christian musician to appear at St. Andrew’s Church. In 2017 worship song writer Stuart Townend played to a packed church of over 300 people as did composer and worship leader Graham Kendrick who was there in May this year. ‘We are so pleased to be able to bring artists like Jonathan Veira in the setting of St. Andrew’s Church with its triple projector screens and special stage lighting. It will be an evening to remember!’ said organiser Janet Bowden.

Also involved is Tony Mallion from Cliff Park Community Church (a church plant set up by St.Andrew’s and Gorleston Baptist Church almost 20 years ago) who said: ‘I’ve promoted Jonathan on the three previous visits and audiences come away feeling it has been a great evening of both worship and entertainment. I saw part of the new Hymns Project show at the Spring Harvest conference earlier this year and felt it was definitely one for Gorleston and something which on this occasion would fit so well at St.Andrew’s.’

An Evening with Jonathan Veira is at St.Andrew’s Church, Church Rd, Gorleston-on-Sea, Great Yarmouth NR31 6LR on Saturday January 26 at 7.30pm.

Tickets priced £10 are on sale now online at www.standrewsgorleston.org.uk or the church office on 01493 656078
