Yarmouth homeless charity needs more volunteers

2018: The Great Yarmouth homeless charity GYbeeandbee is appealing for more volunteers and more bed and breakfast landlords.

Over the last seven years the GYbeeandbee charity has helped 365 people who were street homeless in Great Yarmouth by paying for a few nights bed and breakfast in the town. In some cases, this has resulted in long term accommodation for them. For others it has provided respite from the cold and wet.

The founding members were a group of Christians from Park Baptist Church who all had a heart for the homeless and needy, and wanted to help by offering short term accommodation and food, and assistance to contact the appropriate agencies to enable longer term stability.

The group started back in 2011 when volunteers at the Park Friendship Centre struggled to find accommodation for a couple of visitors to the centre who needed a bed for the night. They decided to take action, and decided to set up the charity to offer up to three nights bed and breakfast accommodation to people who would otherwise have to sleep on the streets or on the beach, provided in conjunction with pre-approved guest houses in the town. The following working day the group would then assist them by contacting the appropriate agencies to arrange something on a more permanent footing.

Many agencies in the town call them when someone needs their help.  Last winter they provided extra nights of respite to some of the Living Room clients. For more on the work of the Living Room homeless charity, also working in Great Yarmouth, click here.

The charity’s five Christian trustees now need a few more volunteers to answer the dedicated phone.  They also need other landlords to provide the bed and breakfast accommodation.  They do not give money to clients, they pay the landlords in advance.

They do have some funding in place for this winter to help people who face the ordeal of being homeless, but the group would appreciate prayers.
