Wells church members sleep out to help homeless

2017: A small team from the churches in Wells-next-the-Sea took part in the Advent Sleep-out on December 9 to raise funds for the Church Urban Fund. Tony Rothe reports.

The event took place on The Buttlands in Wells, opposite the Globe Inn, despite freezing temperatures.

The sleepout is a national initiative launched by the Church Urban Fund to raise money for some of their projects, through local sponsorship, and raise awareness about homelessness and the work that is already happening to make a difference for those without a roof over their heads.

Organiser Alison Bowles said “Despite the freezing temperatures, lots of people were looking out for us and we kept snug and warm.  We hope to have made nearly £2000 for the Church Urban Fund’s projects for marginalised and homeless people. And we had the hoots of the owls and the ‘wink-wink’ call of the pink foot geese overhead for company!”

The Church Urban Fund is working to transform lives and transform society. They want all people and communities to flourish. They support local churches to bring about change in poor communities by coming alongside those who lack hope or self-belief, to encourage, enable and equip them to take control of their lives.
