Joseph's double challenge in aid of YMCA Norfolk

YMCA Norfolk Key Worker, Joseph Bickerdike from Norwich, is set to take on a double challenge to raise money for the Christian charity, by running his first ever marathon in London on April 26 and, a few months, later completing the 360-mile Tour de Y bike ride.

Joseph has been working at the YMCA’s John Drake House accommodation facility in central Norwich for the past 18 months and was inspired by the role to take on the 26-mile London Marathon in April as part of the team from YMCA England.

He said: “I’ve done a couple of half-marathon’s but never a full marathon and it has been on my bucket list for a while. I’ve heard people say the London Marathon is an amazing atmosphere and I’m quite fortunate to be able to get a place in a very famous race.

“I’m excited about the event but know that my body is going to be hurting long before the 26 miles are over. But knowing that I’m running for a great cause and have raised a heap of money will give me that extra little drive and incentive.

“I work for YMCA Norfolk in Norwich where we work to support young people to develop their full potential in mind, body and spirit.  I work with young people affected by homelessness and I know first hand the amazing impact that this fundraising could have. I’d also love to help break down stereotypes that we so often have of young people, homelessness and those on benefits.”

After hopefully completing the marathon, Joseph, who attends Oak Grove Community Chapel in Norwich, will go into five months of training for the annual Tour de Y cycle challenge.

“I ride my bike around town and to work etc but have never done any long rides,” said Joseph. “So 360 miles will be a bit different and quite a challenge. A couple of my friends are also doing it, so it should be a bit of an adventure.”

Every night, YMCA Norfolk provides a safe home for over 260 homeless young people and support to enable them to fulfil their potential.

All of the funds raised will go towards YMCA Norfolk's work supporting vulnerable and disadvantaged young people towards a brighter future.
