East Norfolk churches mourn death of rector
2012: The churches of the Flegg Group of Parishes are in mourning following the death of their Rector, the Revd Neil Spencer.
Neil was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer shortly before Christmas, and died on January 25. He was 62.
A graduate of Leeds University, Neil worked in the Hereford and Worcester Library Services before ordination, and was Area Librarian of South Herefordshire. He trained for the priesthood on the West of England Ministerial Training Course and was ordained in Hereford Cathedral in 1999.
He ministered as an NSM of Ludlow, Ludford, Ashford Carbonell in the Diocese of Hereford from 1999-2002, and then as Curate of Letton with Staunton, Byford, Mansel Gamage in the same Diocese from 2002-2005.
He came to the Diocese of Norwich in 2005 as Vicar of the Flegg Group of Parishes - Ormesby St Margaret with Scratby, Ormesby St Michael and Rollesby. He was Chairman of the Norwich Branch of the Prayer Book Society, Chaplain to the local branches of the Royal British Legion and a frequent visitor in local schools, serving as governor of the infant school at Ormesby.
The Bishop of Norwich said: "Neil was a gifted and dedicated priest who loved his people and parishes and was greatly loved in return. His final illness took hold very quickly but Neil faced his death with faith and courage. The speed with which things happened will leave many stunned but the gratitude for his life and ministry throughout the diocese is enormous.”
Please pray for Neil's wife, Carrie, all their family as well as Neil's collegues and parishioners.
The funeral is to take place at St Margaret's Church, Ormesby St. Margaret on Tuesday February 7 at 2pm, followed by cremation.
