Norwich church forms learning links for mission

oak grove sundayA Norwich church has formed links with a learning community in Sheffield to help develop their future plans for mission an growth.

Oak Grove Chapel has joined a learning community for the next two years based in Sheffield with St Thomas Philadelphia (Network Church Sheffield).

Four leaders from Oak Grove Chapel will visit Sheffield every 6 months for training and support and join the learning community of nine churches. The first event took place this autumn and leaders reported that it was a great time for thinking, hearing other’s stories and a lot of hard work.

“St Thomas Philadelphia are far ahead of us on a missional journey and we are so thankful for this opportunity to learn all we can” said Ian Savory.

The Learning Communities are a 2 year process to help the church as they engage with mission and discipleship. The church leaders gather four times during the process, with a group of other churches.

Churches of varying denominations are involved. There is recognition that there isn't one model of church but the aim is to help people in the journey towards the church community God in calling them to be within their context. The nearest church in the learning community is a fellowship from Ipswich.
The learning community is based around helping churches develop their mission today in four key areas:
  • Creating a discipleship culture
  • Multiplying missional leaders
  • Launching mission communities
  • Establishing centres of mission
The purpose behind the learning is the belief that community is a great way for individuals to get to know people within the church, and is the best forum for ongoing discipleship and personal growth. It also provides real opportunity for people to live out or discover their God-given calling and to engage in mission to the city.
