Urgent appeal for King's Lynn Night Shelter volunteers

A series of information and training evenings will take place across King’s Lynn during the next month in order to recruit and prepare new volunteers for the opening of the Winter Night Shelter on October 31.

The King’s Lynn Winter Night Shelter will open seven nights a week from Thursday, October 31 until Sunday, March 30 welcoming and caring for those who would otherwise be sleeping rough on the streets. The operation, a partnership between local churches, charities and agencies in the town, urgently needs volunteers to help serve the Shelter’s homeless guests.

Four information and training evenings are planned in October to inspire and prepare new recruits, as well as inform the wider team about this winter's plans and any changes for the new season. These will take place on:

Tuesday, October 1, 7pm at St John’s Church in the Walks, Blackfriars Road PE30 1NT
Wednesday, October 2, 7pm at All Saints Church, North Wootton PE30 3PZ
Tuesday, October 8, 7pm at Cornerstone Baptist Church, Wisbech Road PE30 5JS
Tuesday, October 15, 7pm at St Faith’s Church Hall, Gaywood PE30 4DZ

Lucy McKitterick, Coordinator of the Night Shelter said: No experience is needed and you can volunteer as much or little time as you wish. We aim to have at least three volunteers on each shift (breakfast, dinner, overnight) and we also need cooks for dinner and for our weekend breakfasts.”

The Mayor of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk and the Bishop of Lynn will both attend a blessing of the Night Shelter at 11am on Wednesday, October 30. The occasion will be an opportunity to look back over the last season and forward to the next, as well as launching the new Friends of the Night Shelter scheme. Lucy said: “It will be a great thing to join and should be a really nice chance to meet together before the vital work of the winter begins.”

Please could you let Lucy know by Tuesday, October 15 if you would like to volunteer and when in November you are available. You can contact Lucy by emailing nightshelter.steering@gmail.com or call 01553 776109.
