Norwich homeless charity appeals for volunteer collectors

Over 50 volunteers, supporters, staff and clients of St Martins gathered to prepare for the annual street collection to raise vital funds for the Norwich-based homelessness charity.

The event was held at The Great Hospital to provide information to the Christmas street collectors so they are well informed and can answer questions about St Martins from members of the public.

Chief Executive Dr Jan Sheldon gave a presentation about the national picture and the work St Martins is doing. Staff member Nicky King spoke from the perspective of front-line staff.  She feels it is a privilege to work for St Martins and spoke about the ups and downs as she supports clients out of homelessness. She described it as ‘the best job in the world’.

KevinCFTwo people who have used St Martins services spoke about their experiences. Other clients attended and were available to network with the street collectors. The food was prepared by Kevin [pictured right], a pastry chef who used to live at the charity’s hostel Bishopbridge House. Kevin also shared his experience of being supported by the charity.

St Martins annual street collection takes place every day between December 1 and Christmas eve except Sundays. St Martins has some loyal volunteers, some of whom have been collecting cash for the charity for over 20 years. Volunteer collectors are provided with a collection tin and a tabard to identify them and they accept donations of change from the public.

More volunteers are welcome – if you would like to get involved, please contact Gill Williams at gillianswilliams@aol.com or on (01603) 438766. The more people collect, more money is raised and the money will go towards more accommodation for people who are homeless in Norwich.
