4Cs appeal for room to grow counselling in Dereham
Local Christian charity 4Cs (Centre for Christian Care and Counselling), is appealing for an additional room or rooms in Dereham to meet the rising need for affordable counselling in the Mid Norfolk town.
4Cs, Centre for Christian Care and Counselling, is a charity offering high quality, low cost counselling to local people across Norfolk regardless of age, race, beliefs, background or sexuality. All the counsellors are Christian and the service is constantly expanding due to an ever increasing need for accessible affordable talking therapy.
Demand in Dereham is now particularly intense and 4Cs has made an appeal to find an affordable room or rooms in the town to enable them to increase their counselling provision.
Kath Habershon (pictured right), Director of 4Cs, said: “Demand for the service in Dereham has risen sharply recently, and we need to take on more counsellors. We have been grateful to Dereham Baptist Church for the generous provision of a room and office space for many years. However, there is now an urgent need for additional accommodation, and in particular for somewhere with disabled access, as the room within Dereham Baptist Church is up a very steep flight of stairs.
“We are looking for someone who may have a suitable room or rooms within a building which we could use. Ideally there would also be the availability of kitchen facilities and the possibility of leaving a lockable filing cabinet on the premises. Initially the room might only be used on one or two days a week, but it would be good if there was the opportunity to increase our usage as the service in Dereham grows."
4Cs is committed to keeping the service available to those without the ability to afford a hefty charge. The charity are therefore not able to take on premises charging high commercial rates, but some rent could be offered.
In addition to Dereham 4Cs has a main base in Norwich and a satellite branch in King’s Lynn. This year they have added an additional counselling room and designated office within Norwich Central Baptist Church (NCBC) where they are based, thanks to the generosity of NCBC and funding through the Norfolk Community Foundation.
Kath said: “We have been able to take on more volunteer counsellors as a result, taking the total to 15 and have therefore been able to reduce our waiting lists. There are currently over 60 people per week from our local communities using our service. Clients come with a wide range of issues including depression, anxiety, bereavement, abuse and addiction.”
4Cs is staffed by counsellors who abide by the ethical codes of the BACP and ACC, are Christians, and work on a voluntary basis. They are always willing to consider applications for volunteer counsellors to join their team. You can find out more about volunteering with 4Cs as a counsellor here.
