Hair-Off event raises £1000 for Stalham Baptists
2017: The recent Great Stalham Hair Off event at Stalham Baptist Church raised £1000, which will be shared between the church building fund and McMillan Cancer Support. Tony Rothe reports.
John Applegate (pictured right above) and John Higgs (left) bravely agreed to the drastic pruning, which was carried out by Paula Baker of Mytell Hair Design in Stalham (also pictured).
John Applegate wanted to raise money for the refurbishment of school rooms and toilets at Stalham Baptist Church, and decided to do this by having his considerable locks shaven. He saw an advert on TV for McMillians with the strap line “Brave the Shave”. John says this resonated with him as a member of the fellowship is terminally ill and his mum and several uncles died of cancer.
“There was absolutely no support for my family members at the time” he said, and decided to make it a joint venture for both causes. John contacted McMillians to confirm that they would be happy for this to be a joint fund-raising effort.
John Higgs took part in order to support his friend John Applegate and to also raise money for the 2 good causes.
The building fund has benefitted from a number of donations over the last few weeks, including the Collectors street fare, Afternoon Tea Pims and Croquet, and a Table Top Sale at the church, as well as the £500 from the Hair-Off.
